Mandatory Break-in Procedure for New Blades

 

To maximize blade life and ensure operational safety, a mandatory break-in (or "run-in") procedure must be followed for every new bimetal band saw blade.

During the first 0.5 to 1 hour of cutting area exposure, the normal feed rate must be reduced by 30% to 50%.

This controlled initial operation allows the microscopic cutting edges (micro-edges) on the tooth tips to gradually develop a stable, uniform wear land. Without this process, the fresh, sharp teeth are highly susceptible to micro-chipping and premature dulling, which significantly shortens blade life and increases the risk of sudden breakage.

The primary purpose of break-in is to avoid initial tooth chipping by encouraging a smooth transition from an ultra-sharp edge to a mildly work-hardened, wear-resistant profile.

Running the blade at a reduced feed rate for the recommended duration ensures that the entire tooth form settles into a stable cutting condition, reducing heat generation and preventing localized stress concentrations.

For optimal results, the break-in material should be the same type as the intended production workpiece, or slightly softer. Never run a new blade on materials harder than the standard application during the break-in phase.

After break-in, the feed rate can be gradually increased to normal production levels.

Regular inspection for abnormal wear, vibration, or cut deviation is also essential for safety.

Following this mandatory procedure will reduce saw blade failure, improve cut quality, and extend blade service life by up to 30–50% under typical shop conditions.
