How to Set a Band Saw to the Correct Speed

Mar 06, 2025

1. First, the units and basics of speed about band saw blade

Typically, saw band speed is measured in two units, surface feet per minute (SFPM) and surface meters per minute (SMPM), which can be converted to each other using a formula.

This involves determining the RPM (the machine manual should tell you this, or you can find it by recording the number of revolutions per minute of the wheel). Then measure the circumference of the drive wheel and multiply it by the RPM.

2. Conventional speed settings, and detailed introduction about band saw blade

Band saw blade speeds range from 40 feet per minute to 5,000 feet per minute. However, traditional band saws are set to about 5,000 SFPM for wood cutting. Band saws with multi-speed capabilities have secondary speeds that are about half to one-third slower than 5,000 SFPM.

In fact, it can be anywhere between 60 and 300 (SFPM). This speed is used to cut metals such as titanium, aluminum, brass and copper, as well as thin steel.
It is also worth noting that each material has its own characteristics and requires different speeds for optimal cutting performance. Harder metals will generally require the use of specific band saws with speeds greater than 300 SFPM. Using the wrong speed for a specific material can result in premature blade wear and poor cutting results.
