How to fully break in band saw blade?

Oct 11, 2023

In the current competitive market environment, everyone wants to reduce costs and increase efficiency, in the sawing application, some people think that reducing equipment input costs or saw blade single price can reduce production costs, in fact, this view is wrong. Simply reducing the investment in fixed assets or the cost of a single tool can not achieve the purpose of cost reduction and efficiency, but through the rational layout of the equipment process and more precise operation and management of the sawing processing process, it can achieve this purpose. Let's talk in detail about how to grind the saw blade and the principle of grinding. 1. How to run the band saw blade in the sawing process, high sawing means to reduce the frequency of replacing the saw blade, reduce the downtime of the sawing machine, if the saw blade and sawing parameters are correctly selected under the premise of the saw blade and sawing parameters, it should be able to properly reduce the downtime. However, different band saw blade products, such as bimetal band saw blade and carbide band saw blade, its running-in method is not the same, and different sawing materials and material shapes, the choice of running-in parameters should also be different. The first is to determine the initial sawing speed, bimetallic band saw blade in the sawing carbon steel and annealed state of low and medium alloy, sawing speed can remain unchanged, such as 200mm large 45 solid steel using 70m/min speed, 42CrMo using 50m/min speed. If it is sawing pipes with a wall thickness below 20mm or where the clamping is not strong, the sawing speed needs to be properly reduced to less than 80%. If sawing steel with hard skin or materials with a hardness higher than 30HRC, the sawing speed also needs to be reduced to less than 80%, of course, when sawing steel with hard skin, use the material without hard skin first. Carbide band saw blade in the run-in, generally reduce the line speed to about 50% of the normal value, but high-speed aluminum alloy band saw generally do not need to reduce the line speed. In addition, the feed speed is set. If it is a solid material of more than 100mm and a pipe of more than 20mm wall thickness, the bimetal band saw blade feed speed is reduced to 50% of its normal speed, and the cemented carbide band saw blade will initially set the feed speed to 10%, and then slowly increase the feed speed, adjust upward with no vibration as the standard, if the vibration, Just lower the feed a bit and run for a while until the feed speed is up to 50%. If it is a pipe with a wall thickness of less than 20mm, the sawing speed should be further calculated according to the feed depth of each tooth. Feed speed =40* band saw line speed *TPI* Standard feed depth per tooth feed speed: mm/min Band saw line speed: m/minTPI: pitch of teeth, 3/4 change teeth to 3.5,1.4/2.0 teeth to 1.7, and so on. Each feed depth of different materials will be different, the range is between 0.02 and 0.05mm, the overall feed per tooth should be lower than its normal feed per tooth.
The feed speed can not be set too low, if the feed rate is too low for a long time on the work hardening material (such as stainless steel), it may cause serious passivation of the tooth tip and affect the life of the tooth tip.
After the initial line speed and feed speed are set and run in for a period of time, the line speed and feed speed are gradually increased to the normal value under the premise that the vibration does not increase. Third, the overall running-in area is determined, the running-in area and sawing materials are also related, soft materials such as low and medium carbon steel and aluminum alloy, running-in area of 320cm2 to 640cm2, roughly equivalent to 100mm diameter round steel 4 to 8; The grinding area of difficult to cut materials needs to be properly reduced, and the total area is about 160cm2 to 480cm2, which is about 2 knives to 6 knives of round steel with a diameter of 100mm. In short, the correct run-in of the saw blade has two basic principles: 1. Control the vibration during sawing; 2, control the feed rate per tooth to be lower than the normal feed rate (this is related to the matching of line speed and feed speed, not just related to feed speed). After the saw blade is run in, the sawing sound will be reduced, in addition, the surface of the workpiece will be smoother. If the new cutting edge is run in normally, the small burrs on these cutting edges will be passivated, and the whole tooth tip will form a rounded corner, so that all parts of the cutting edge can be evenly involved in cutting during normal cutting in the later period. And if the new saw blade just on the sawing machine will be strong cutting, then these small burrs due to sudden relatively large impact force, will be quickly removed from the cutting edge, it is removed not only from itself, but also with part of the body of the cutting edge, resulting in the formation of a relatively large gap when the cutting edge just started, our industry called "tooth collapse" or "tooth tip micro-collapse", When the cutting edge is cut in the later period, many parts of the cutting edge can not evenly participate in the force, and then affect the overall band saw life. If readers still have doubts about run-in, please refer to our experience with pencils after hours, do you think that the newly sharpened pencil should be gently rubbed on the paper first, and the tip will be good to drop more after a little passivation? This is the principle of saw blade running-in. Carbide band saw blade sawing, especially pay attention to run-in, because the alloy head is very brittle, if the cutting edge is not uniform force, the formation of tooth collapse phenomenon will be more serious. The following picture shows the situation of tooth breakage at the tip of the alloy tooth that has not been run in.
Different materials and different working conditions saw blade running-in procedures will be slightly different. If the user wants to check whether the saw blade running-in is normal, he can buy a magnifying glass or microscope of 10 to 20 times, check the tooth tip after running-in, and then determine the specific running-in procedure for different materials of his own. The portable microscope saw blade used to observe the tip of the teeth can significantly extend the life of the band saw blade by 20% or more, although some manufacturers on the market now saw blade passivation treatment, but in order to ensure the normal life of the saw blade, it is recommended that customers should explore more ways to use each saw blade, in order to achieve the purpose of saw blade utility.
