The defining feature of a bi-metal band saw blade is the combination of two steels with different properties. The high-speed steel used for the teeth is extremely hard and can withstand the high heat generated by friction during cutting. It also maintains a sharp edge for longer periods, allowing for more efficient, accurate cuts. By contrast, the body of the blade is made from a softer, more flexible steel that allows the blade to bend and twist during cutting, resisting the stresses and strains that would cause a more brittle blade to snap.
 

Two materials, high speed steel (HSS)for the teeth and alloyed steel as the backing material ,are joined during the high energy laser welding process.
